Lesson 2.3.1
Inspecting carpet properly
Inspect underneath the carpet for hidden moisture.
- Use a moisture sensor or thermal imaging to find wet areas of carpet and underlay. If using a moisture sensor, ideally start at the source and work towards the dry area of the carpet.
- Identify the construction type of the carpet, underlay and subflooring. Depending on the installation, go to a corner of the room or a loose section to determine this.
- To lift the carpet use a carpet knee kicker with a carpet awl to lift edges off the smooth edge (tack stripping).
Inspect for pre-existing damage
- Dry rot in timber
- Urine contamination in carpets
- Visible mould growth or mould-related damage
- Malodours
- Delamination of carpet, primary from secondary backing
- Visible staining and deterioration
- Damage unrelated to water, such as wear, use or lack of maintenance
