Choosing PPE and the four routes of exposure
PPE has to be used properly. It’s designed to protect you from exposure to potentially infectious material.
Choosing it
Selection depends on the anticipated exposure, the types of microbial contamination present, the activities you’ll be doing, and the hazards of any chemicals used in the restoration. Before entering a structure that may be contaminated, whether for inspection or restoration work, wear PPE suited to the situation. You can also advise others entering the structure on what protection they need.
Donning and doffing
Learn the correct way to put PPE on and take it off. PPE itself becomes a source of contamination for the wearer.
Four routes of exposure
- Inhalation — respiratory system
- Absorption — contact with mucous membranes
- Ingestion — masks and respirators
- Injection — puncture of the skin
